| The Dublin brigade badge was
the for-runner of the modern defence badges to follow It
consists of a 8 pointed star (of no significance) intertwine
with a sunburst (the traditional Fianna symbol for battle) The words "Drong Áta Cliath are written on a belt inside the star / sunburst with a buckle at its beginning and 3 dots at the end for belt holes. This would translate as "Dublin Brigade" The letters "FF" also intertwine in the centre stand for "Fianna Fáil", not the political party, but rather Fianna as in the old Celtic army and Fáil , the Irish for destiny Officers would have worn a whiter metal version while lower ranks would have a bronze example |

| The 1922 National army retained the Irish Volunteers Cap Badge with the written "Óglaig na h-Éireann" being the only difference s from the above example , its text translating as "Soldiers of Ireland". | |

| In 1922 the colour of the
cap badge diamond was None for volunteers, Green for corporal to Sergeant-Major, Blue for 2nd Lieutenant to Captain, Purple for Vice-Commandant, Brown for Lieutenant -Commandant-brigade Red for Lieutenant Commandant (Division) Purple / Brown / Red for Commandant Battalion / Brigade / Division Brown for Brigadier and Red for Colonel - Commandant |
